Description:

Many of us are new to the world of Art Journaling, so this is our practice run. You will take any type of book you want to use, I am using one like in the picture a 9 x 7 composition book. Any size is fine. The first page is all about you, decorate it with pictures, stamps, crayons, pencils, markers, paints, GLITTER, OH LORD, DO NOT FORGET THE GLITTER!!!! Don’t worry if you can’t draw, or if your collages look like something you made in preschool, just as long as you have a creative way to decorate your journal pages a little, and that you ENJOY doing it. But remember, you may get a “first-timers” work in return!
This is round 1:

10 ART pages (15 if you want to do more)
Prompts on each page
Leave room if you want your partner to add to your page
Here are some sites I found for prompts and ideas:

When I use the 9x7 comp book I usally take 2 to 3 pages and glue them together, making less pages in your book. If you decide to buy a 5x7 sketch pad, check the number of pages in it. You can pull out a lot of pages so the journal does not get too big. If you are going to use a book, it might be a good idea to carefully go in and remove some pages before you send it. If the book has pages sewn in, go to a page where you can see the stiching and gently ease out a few pages. Usually a book will have several of the these sections and you can thin down the book by removing a few pages from each sewn section (which is called a signature).
Now for the shipping. Journals do get lost in the mail. @Linda50 suggest you consider sending in a small flat rate box. That would be $4.95 each time you mail. That way no surprises on the cost. A flat rate box will easily hold a 5x7 book, the flat mailers will hold a 9x7 comp book and they don't seem to get lost.(thanks @Linda50

Here is a Art Journal swap you can look at to get prompt ideas too.

You are starting your journal 10 to 15 pages your choice. Prompts on those pages for your first partner. Once you get your partners journal you will Journal from their prompt in their book. Then you create 10 ART pages with prompts in their book. Once everyone is finished with this we are ready to send to the next. Once everyone has filled out everyone else's journal it is time to send the Journal home to rightful owner. I hope this help. We will get thru this. The most important thing is to have fun!

Let's get to it! Create something beautiful like the beauties we are!

When you say 10 'art pages', do you mean we art them up (our own books) before sending them out for our partner to add to the same 10 pages? If we don't "leave room for our partner to add to our page or pages" does that mean our partner starts from scratch on the next 10 blank pages?

dulcimer 08/ 9/2011 #

are prompts for me or my partner?

djcamp04 08/ 9/2011 #

I am back at editing it to add more so maybe it will help you out. Some of it seems to have disappered.

djcamp04 08/ 9/2011 #

dulcimer: the prompts are for your partner
wanda: you do 10 pages with prompts, your partner will answer/write from the prompts and then they will create 10 pages in your book with prompts and when done it goes to the next person and then the next until it has been to all and then it comes back to you

Okay, then...so I ONLY put prompts on my 10 pages - no paint, no color, no glitter, etc. Just words (the prompts) written on the top of the white pages. In other words I DON'T do any arting up on my first 10 pages of my book.

Kimbeewa 08/10/2011 #

I believe we create 10 artful pages and add prompts to those pages. Then we mail the book. The person we mail it too answers the prompts on the pages we made. That person then makes 10 artful pages and adds their prompts and mails to the next person to do what they just did (answer the prompts and create their own 10 artful prompt pages).

This is how I'm understanding it.

Cheap flat rate boxes are not available here.

CONFUSED Do I create one page about me then glue page together to make 10-15 promp pages like sticking a stcky note to a page that say "you favorite color" or "favorite place to visit" and your partner journals that into the book for you then sents it back to you?

djcamp04 08/12/2011 #

Kim is understanding right. Also if you go to our group forum there is a sticky titled Artful Junk Journal Estilo CHICAS with more info help and links to use.

Ok my dear friends. I am taking a huge leap here and signing up for this swap. Walmart had the composition books for only 40 cents the other day. Of course I have a bunch of other blank journals and I also like making them. So first step is decide what to use for this. I like to use acrylic paints so I am thinking I might use some heavier pages.

Just realized this is international. But that is Ok with me I would not want to miss out on a chance to journal with @dulcimer I think if we use one of those unrippable tyvek envelopes for shipping international that should work. I encourage everyone to be careful of the weight. In the past it has cost me around $15 to send a journal international.

This is pretty exciting. I have recently cut a bunch of magazine pictures out. Some of them from my sons Game Informer magazine that are so cool. I will keep an eye out for someone who loves that style so I can put them in their journal.

Oh and I guessed the password. Should I feel smart?

Wanda 10/12/2011 #

Um...I think tomorrow is the 'send by' deadline for this swap. Is the swap still on? Are we sending out then? I'll have to go dig mine up from out in the studio, if so....
