Description:

This is the fourth in a series of "bizarre animal" swaps. These will be depicting real animals -- but ones that are almost fantasy in appearance or behavior. I am planning on picking a variety of mammals, insects, reptiles, birds, invetebrates, etc. over the course of this series.

The image size will be a standard ATC. I hope for a lot of participation in this swap. With that in mind you can portray the Narwhal as either an illustration or via any print-making method.

The Narwhal is a medium-sized toothed whale of the Arctic. It's scientific name is Monodon monoceros which is Greek for "one-tooth one-horn". The Narwhal, and its similar family member the Beluga Whale, are considered the "white whales". The Narwhal has a very narrow geographical range and a specialized diet -- both of which make it extremely vulnerable to environmental and climate changes.

The most bizarre characteristic of this whale is the long tusk protruding from its upper jaw. This tusk is actually the left incisor tooth. In males it is up to half the length of the whale's body and helical (it has a left twist). In females it is shorter and straighter. About 1 in every 500 males has both incisors forming a tusk. The tusk is not used aggressively in combats. Males will often rub their tusks together as a behavior for social heirarchy.

Narwhals have some of the deepest dives ever recorded for marine mammals. They can spend 25 minutes at a time underwater and dive to depths of 1500 meters (4,921 feet).

I am having to miss this swap due to an out of town workshop I'm attending - if anyone is interested in a private trade for a narwhal ATC later in May, let me know!
