Description:

Not being Christian, this whole Christmas thing can get rather overwhelming. Look at the top swaps - half of them are Christmas related and it's only September! I don't begrudge anybody their celebration, but its a time of year I feel very much an outsider, yet unwittingly sucked into the consumer spending spree because of my in-laws. I actually find the story of the Nativity lovely, but in the US, its about decorating, eating, and spending money, not about celebrating birth.

For this swap, you will create a greeting card or handmade postcard about any winter holiday of your choice, representing the underlying spiritual theme. You may have to think really hard about this, so that anybody can relate to it and that's the challenge.

This website has an introduction to many holidays:

Open to anyone, from any country, with good recent ratings and newbies with complete profiles.

Is there a swap in this? Sounds like a rather interesting one really!

I guess we send one handmade card/postcard to each of 2 partners. I am a little confused, though. We are only supposed to make cards that "anyone can relate to". To me, that would rule out all winter holidays related to any particular religion or culture. If so, then what are we left with from the list provided?

Terry, it's only one partner, and as far as "anyone can relate to", that's the challenge - to really get underneath the "exterior" of the holiday, and find some kind of universal spiritual meaning in it. As an example, as a non-Christian, I can definitely relate to Christmas as a holiday that celebrates a child born, even someone born in poverty in a barn, as having the potent to become someone phenomenal who can change the world. Does that make sense?

Gotcha now - thx!

Jessie,

Hi Jessie. I'm not sure why I am not being acknowledged...maybe it is because I'm a newbie to this site and have yet to be rated, or perhaps my brief profile paragraph isn't enough? But no word at all? Ironically, your name was one of the ones on my list for the "All My Heros are Weirdos" swap, I think you should have it by now or very soon, this weekend. Hopefully that postcard can stand as a rating, show my credibility. ???

denchar, Jessie does not have to let you know whether you are in or out until after Dec. 1. A little friendly advice, meant in the spirit of ensuring you are included in this swap: your profile has hardly any information in it. I would suggest that you check out other peoples' profiles and beef yours up accordingly. It is very hard for partners to know what to send if they have no information about you. A lot of swap hosts would ban you for this alone. Good luck!

Jessie-messie-bo-bessie…..

In short, the Christmas holiday, and most Christian holiday celebrations, derives from pagan holidays. It has been established time and again that Jesus was not born on December 25. That he was born some time in May (or June, or July, depending who you are listening to). The celebrations were adopted and redecorated, if you will, to draw the pagans into Christianity.

Now, having put my two cents in, is it alright if I join the swap?

;-)

Have a lovely weekend…..

TerryF, hi, and thank you for your tip. I fogot all about that page until your mention...I returned to it this morning and filled it in. It's not as lengthy as many, I find it awkward to toot my own horn, but it is far more informative than it was. I covered the offered topics in the pull-down, and also are two links to my pages with some of my art work on them. I hope this all adds comfort and security to all who check it out, and I do hope that I will be included in this small call, as I have a great idea, actually two of them, and have already started on the one.

denchar, your profile looks just fine now!

I changed the signup date because I will be away for a few days.
