Swapping Four 10.5" Finished Blocks

Tilted Four Patch Pattern Link: Tilted Four Patch
Triangle Template Link: Triangle Template

Materials Needed PER BLOCK:
Color 1 needs: one 4-3/4" square
Color 2 needs: one 4-3/4" square
Color 3 needs: one 4-3/4" square
Color 4 needs: one 4-3/4" square
Color 5 needs: two 10-1/2" x 4" rectangles

Fabric should be new, of good quality and 100% cotton. It is SENDERS CHOICE for the colors. If using scraps to make your blocks please make sure they are new scraps and not "attic fresh" or musty smelling. Please, no holiday or novelty fabric. Measure your blocks before sending them and make sure they measure 10.5" square.

If you have allergies please state this so your partner knows. If I need to pair you with a new partner I will do so. If possible, use fabrics you already have in your stash. This is a stash busting swap!

What does everyone think of the block pattern I chose? I had a hard time picking one that I thought would be easy for beginners but still fun for experienced quilters.

quilter623 09/29/2010 #

I like this pattern! It is fun and can be really fun in most types of fabrics.

jamleft 09/29/2010 #

I like the pattern. I have never made this block so I am looking forward to digging into my stash to get them put together.

Deadline is almost here! Pass the word along to your friends :) Then we can get started on the blocks and post pictures of our swap.

scientificquilter 10/30/2010 #

The pattern you link to says in the top left corner that these finish to 10", but in the description you say to cut to 10 and a half. Do you want us to upscale the pattern or finish at 10" using the current pattern? Thanks

QuiltedMagnolia 10/30/2010 #

When the blocks are sewn together into a quilt they will end up being 10" square. Blocks that are not sewn into a quilt yet will be 10.5" due to the 1/4 seam allowance on all sides.

The pattern will have you create 10.5" blocks that will be sewn into a quilt creating blocks that will then measure 10" square.

I'm a newbie to Swap-bot. Where do I find the info of my assigned partner?

smoothquilter 11/ 1/2010 #

I am an experienced quilter but I had a little difficulty with this block. I ended up drafting it on squared paper after unpicking a few times. I would have prefered a block that required no templates as it would have been a lot quicker. I don't think I'll be doing a full quilt with this swap but will look forward to doing further swaps. Good luck to everyone. My blocks are ready to be dispatched.

I also had a little difficulty w/ this block because of the templates. I finally managed to make 4 blocks that finished at 10.5 inches for this exchange. Whenever I've made this type of tilted block before, I have sewn oversized rectangles to the center then trimmed the block to the desired size. That method is a lot easier and more accurate than dealing w/ the long skinny triangle.

Sorry about the template problem! I didn't test the pattern before assigning it and probably should have. It seemed simple enough. Does everyone want to swap something different or stick with this pattern?

smoothquilter 11/ 2/2010 #

Mine are already done but I'll go along with the rest of the group. Has anyone seen Crumb piecing ? Its easy, uses almost any size scraps, no templates and addictive. I actually have made 26 blocks (5") in one sewing session and can't stop ! Its so much fun. Once you have the blocks there are so many ways to put the blocks together into a quilt. Check out http://quiltville.com/crumbspf.html, you wont be dissappointed..

QuiltedMagnolia 11/ 2/2010 #

@Smoothquilter - I was really hoping to do a string block swap or crumb swap at some point since it is fun to put those scraps to work. Maybe that'll be part of the next swap I host.

Everyone that answered the e-mail I sent said they'd stick it out, especially since some already had their blocks done.

TheCommonThread 11/ 3/2010 #

I didn't get an email, and I signed up Oct 29.

QuiltedMagnolia 11/ 4/2010 #

Did you actually join the swap or just create a swapbot account? I don't see you listed in the participants list at all. :( Sorry!

We will be doing another Swap after this one so sign up for that.

QuiltedMagnolia 11/ 8/2010 #

I finished one block and I'm nearly finished with the others. I think using the freezer paper on the back kept the fabric from moving around so much, my blocks turned out fine. I also made the triangles bigger than they should have been and just trimmed the block down to 10.5". That worked out much faster and it was more accurate I think. Will finish mine this week and get them mailed out. Looking forward to an easier block next time! :)

TheCommonThread 11/ 9/2010 #

re the question did I join the swap or just create an account, I thought I did everything I was supposed to do. At a minimum I created the account. What else am i supposed to do other than come to this page http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/73949

QuiltedMagnolia 11/10/2010 #

You would have to click "Join Swap" once you come to the page. It is past the deadline now so you aren't able to do that any longer. The button is located after the swap description and there is also an option to "watch swap" so you can just see how it went without actually participating.

Your swap bot account is good for any swap on swapbot so you have to tell it which swaps you want to participate in. :)

Almost everyone has sent out their blocks! We're only missing blocks from 4 swappers. I'm trying to figure out if they plan on sending out any blocks or if I need to start making replacement blocks for their partners. Swap ends Saturday!

Please link photos of your blocks in Big Tent.

punkrokchik75 01/ 4/2011 #
