Description:

Now, I would never bad-mouth swap-bot, I'm still faithful thru and thru, but I am sensing some redundancy in some swaps. I set forth this extreme challenge for those willing to undertake it!!

This swap will consist of two parts: sending your partner something to alter and the materials to alter it. Once your partner is finished, they will mail it back to YOU.

ONE: You will send your partner a substrate to alter. It can be a piece of masonite board, a blank canvas, an old canvas you no longer want, a board book page, a box, a tin.... you get the idea. The substrate must be larger then 4 inches by 6 inches (total surface area - which means for boxes/tins the inner and outer surfaces could add up to meet the minimum requirement). The substrate must be substantial - not just paper.

You will also send your partner the materials for them to alter the substrate, as well as some for them to keep:

  • 5 old book pages (or tea-stained to look aged)

  • 3 pieces of specialty paper (at least 4x6inches) this can include vellum, handmade paper, flocked, glittered, etc.

  • 2 pieces of lace (at least 6inches long)

  • 4 pieces of ribbon (at least 6inches long)

  • 15 images (from magazines/die-cuts/old photos)

  • 1 piece of fabric

  • 5 charms or metal embellishments

  • 5 embellishments of your choice.

REMEMBER the items you send are the things your partner will be using to make something for YOU! This is the bare minimum of requirements, if you feel the need to send more items, by all means do so!! If you want a certain theme for your item, the items you send should reflect that.

THE CHALLENGE::: Your partner (and you) are ONLY allowed to use the materials that are sent!!! Obviously you can use any adhesives and coloring materials, but everything else must be what was sent to you by your partner!!

STEP TWO: Your partner will have three weeks to alter the item and send it back. Now, due to only being able to put one deadline on swap-bot, I will set the deadline five weeks past the sign-up date. That means you will have one week to send out the materials, one week (give or take) for them to receive the materials, and three weeks for your partner to alter it.

Participants must have completed at least 25 type 3 swaps (crafts & packages) and must have no 1's or 3's in the past three months.

ooh this seems interesting ...

I really like this idea! Watching for now!!

This is a fantastic idea and I heartily approve - creative, challenging, and just my cup of tea. I am almost in tears though, to see that this is regional - I understand it's because you need to get a quick turn-around of materials, but oh, so sad I can't participate!

If anyone would like to take a chance on doing this as a private swap with me, would you be ok with that, Coco? People can check my ratings and my Flickr page for an idea of the sort of artist I am :) Please let me know!

Masterbard, I just PM'd ya!

daisylover 01/27/2010 #

Wow! I hope you do this one again - I don't have 25 swaps done but I do have a 5 rating...... This sounds like so much fun!

I am a veteran swapper on-line, but just joined SwapBot. Do you make approval exceptions? Coco, please PM me....I wan't able to PM you.

What a great idea! I'll be watching. :-)

I believe there may be a problem with how this will be rated. Here is an example: 1. Jan sends item to alter to her partner Lisa. 2. Lisa is supposed to rate Jan on the unaltered item. But Lisa is supposed to send the altered item back to Jan but Jan can't rate Lisa because Lisa isn't the original sender. Does that make sense. The swap-bot system would have to be set up so that we get each other for swap partners. Is that possible? I was in a swap about a year ago that was exactly like this and it ended up that we could only rate on the item that was only sent and not altered. Just a thought.

I believe the only way that this would work is you would send to and receive from the same partner. I don't think swap-bot is set up that way. It only selects partners randomly.

I am a newbie but have been doing altered art for quite a while and this sounds very fun and a great challenge to do something outside the box for someone else! Question - what is a type 3 swap? I would like to qualify for the next swap challenge that comes along like this!

Coco26 02/11/2010 #

A type 3 swap is one that involves more time and effort, a larger package or a hand-crafted item. (as opposed to an email swap, or a simple envelope of stuff thrown together).

I'm so glad to hear there's so much interest in this! I'll definitely have to do it again.

In response to jfreeman's comment about ratings (and THANK YOU so much for sending me a message too) I think the solution will lie in setting up private swaps between partners in order to get rated on returning the altered item. I think that would work out. I can set this up for each set of partners (and hopefully work out any bugs that pop up!)

@Coco26 - Were you able to figure out how we are going to rate?

ladydy5 02/17/2010 #

Went to Post office Courtney and they wouldn't accept package as they have no zip code for Stewartstown,N>H. I know it exists as I googled it but apparantly they don't. Can you verify your address please.

ladydy5 02/21/2010 #

coco26 finally got it sent via another post office.

ladydy5 03/ 4/2010 #

Do we have to use all of the items sent to us or just what we feel would make the art piece?
