Description:

This swap is for a TRAVELING self doll. A self doll is one that has your own face, yourself, for the doll’s face. Please, please, please do not sign up for this swap unless you are totally committed to many months’ worth of work! Once Swap-bot assigns the initial swap partners, I will work out a rotating schedule by which we will swap the dolls so everyone has a chance to work on everyone else’s dolls.

These dolls are VERY large; the pattern that everyone will use is found HERE.

You should make sure your doll is constructed correctly according to the directions on the site. Also, you must follow her directions about saving the doll template into an editing program to print her from because if you do print the doll directly from clicking on her, she will not print out the correct size. Doing so will make everyone’s doll the same size so if we are creating templates to use for clothing for the dolls, they will be interchangeable. I intend to mount my doll onto a fairly substantial cardboard/chipboard base and use brads to fasten her parts together. The doll body and face you create for yourself is the one you will get back, so make sure you make what you want! The doll is about 21 inches tall when unfolded, and she folds down to about 10 inches. This will help us send them around in padded envies to help save on mailing costs.
Here are the basics for the swap:

  1. Everyone will create their own doll using the pattern from the link above and send it out to the person Swap-bot assigns to them by the last day to send date.

  2. After the initial swap assigned by Swap-bot, I will create a master schedule that we will use to send the dolls on their round-robin journeys to everyone participating in the swap. This master schedule will be posted on a sticky on the PPAD group forum page, but I will also send an email to each person participating when it is time to switch dolls.

  3. You will make something or add something to everyone’s doll as it arrives at your home.

  4. When you create your doll, make some kind of little journal or book to send out with it so as each person works on your doll, they can record what they did and the date they worked on your baby. Alternatively, you can ask that people journal on the back of your doll, but I personally want the little book.

  5. You can do anything you want to the dolls, but just remember that when the dolls reach their final destinations, they should be fully clothed and accessorized. So, if you are the last person on a doll’s journey and she has no pants or no shirt, you should be obligated to create some kind of garment for the doll. Also, feel free to designate a theme for your doll. If you are a rock ‘n roll glam chick, say so. Conversely, if you want your doll to be Marie Antoinette, again, somehow convey that information to us!

  6. I realize that participating in this swap will be time-consuming and that things happen in our lives, BUT communication is the key to making this a successful project. I am not going to endorse people sending late, but if it happens, it happens. You are responsible for communication with the person next on the list to receive a doll. If this should happen, I think it is a good idea to tell the person what has been done to the doll so far and what you are planning on doing so that perhaps they could go ahead and start their part of the doll’s ensemble. Also, if you simply cannot fulfill your obligation in the swap, we will adjust the rotating schedule and return your unfinished doll to you, AS LONG AS YOU SEND ON ANY DOLLS IN YOUR POSSESSION!

  7. Please add your snail mail address to the group forum thread I have created so that if anyone needs your address to send a doll to you it is available to them.

  8. Don’t forget to put your face on your doll!

  9. HAVE FUN!

lilspotteddog 10/ 9/2009 #

Cool, Mama! I am sure that can be arranged!

snowqueen1426 10/14/2009 #

Okay,, I've already started and I think I want to be a Southern Bell like in Scarlett O'Hara... That is the time period my husband says I belong in.. LOL!.. I have cut my pattern from the back of my water color tablet.. and that cardboard is nice and thick,,,a bit tough to cut.. but do able. Drilled holes with my battery drill and experimenting with fastners.. I printed of my head but it will be just a tad smaller but looks good for the size.. Now I've got the skin color... Question:.. At this point do I just add undies?.. and shes ready to send?.. I'm not sure I can do Naked.. LOL!!

snowqueen1426 10/14/2009 #

Oh... and I'm making a journal for her/me also.. It is 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 roughly the size of copy paper folded in half. How many pages do you think should be in the journal..?

lilspotteddog 10/18/2009 #

Hmmmn, Snowqueen. I think that should maybe depend on how many people we end up with in the swap. I am so stinking excited for this swap. I have been pplanning to hold it for months now. And a special thanks goes out to me bud Rye-Rye for her help and encouragment and to Redsockz for her help and hints for runnning a round robin. Maybe ten-fifteen pages? You can always write more aobut your doll when you get her. 10-15 pages which would give 20-30 double sided. That prob sounds like about how many I will do. Do you know how to do a binding called a "Lock Book"? There are no fasteners, rings, coils, stples, nothing. If you want, PM me and I can give you instructions. And you can leave er nakie. Someone will add unders my dear. Unless you want a particular kind. I Loooove doing corsets and cami's for unnies.

lilspotteddog 10/20/2009 #

Great, Trisha! That darn RyeRye - ain't she a thang?

lilspotteddog 10/20/2009 #

I want to be an old west saloon/dancehall girl.

cpbunch 10/21/2009 #

Ok I'm in!!! I want to be like Audrey Heburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. All "dolled" up!!! (hahahah)

jensquil 10/24/2009 #

I am so excited about this swap! I already have my doll done! I think I would like to be a fairy princess, I love fairies and sparkly things.

bluehighways 10/24/2009 #

I really want to do this but I will preface in saying I've never done a swap like this - will anyone mind a newbie to this type of doll making working on their "selves"? I am an artsy fartsy type as my brother calls me and I am sure you'd be pleased but didn't want to scare anyone off!

If it's ok then my doll would be artsy-natural-bohemian minus the hair (I shave) ;o)

justingrid 10/25/2009 #

Okay I am going to go for it. Sounds like it could be hilarious and challenging. So I would like to be a fifties house wife with a definite gothic edge. June Cleaver slash Morticia Addams. You know the typical domestic goddess.

lilspotteddog 10/26/2009 #

Okay, bluehighways, I think the info you gave falls in the "too much" category! tee-hee. Will your doll have hair on its HEAD?

bluehighways 10/27/2009 #

yah the head - not the legs or armpits though yeecch

lilspotteddog 10/27/2009 #

I see lots of people have commented on what they would like their dolls look like or be. Remember, if you want a specific thime or character thing going on with your doll, it is your responsibility to make sure we all know it. I am going to have so much fun! Looking forward to this!

T 11/ 2/2009 #

will everyone include a note in their journal letting us know what type of selves they're going for? please? that will make things SO much easier . . . i sure don't want to end up being the one to give Scarlett O'Hara a mini skirt and go-go boots. . .

;)trisha

T 11/ 2/2009 #

whoa, wait, i have another question--are we actually attaching the clothing and such? or making it paper doll/removable style?

lilspotteddog 11/ 3/2009 #

Paper doll removeable style clothing is what I want for my doll. I guess that is one thing I meant to specify but didn't. One reason for making the clothing removable is because there are twelve people participating, there will be many pieces of clothing and accessories being made for the dolls. Again, I embedded magnetsin my doll so there will not have to be tabs or velcros or strings since I will be adding magnets to the clothing and accessories after my doll returns home. And yes, T, everyone needs to make sure that if they want their doll to have a theme it is listed in their little traveling journal so people can be sure of what they are doing for the doll.

T 11/ 5/2009 #

thank you! and guess what? Scarlett (aka CJ) showed up in my mailbox yesterday! ! !

i'd better go get working on that miniskirt . . .

;)

lilspotteddog 11/ 5/2009 #

WOW, she's fast! Remember everyone, this first swap date is to get YOUR doll sent off to your first partner. I am emailing everyone a chart of their swap rotations. I could not attach it to the comments b/c it is too long. Check your mail and don't forget to get hold of me if you have a question you can't find the answer to here or on the self doll thread.
