Description:

The faire is coming to town! Come one come all but don't ignore the call!

Note: Please read over this swap carefully, it's not complicated I just like to explain everything with as much detail as I can, but make sure you read all the criteria before signing up.

This is the first in what I hope will become a series of swaps based on the old traveling faires, gypsies, whatever names they were called by, they would set up tents just on the outskirts of town and sell their wares, read fortunes, play instruments and entertain! They would also sell things for the children, potions to cure aliments and so much more! Just a simple faire but something new and exciting nonetheless.

Step 1: The tools

So, this is a swap Morgan le Fay would love, because our first stop is the fortune telling tent! In this swap we are going to explore the tools that tell our fate for well or ill. Think of runes, ogham, tarot cards, tea leaves, palm reading, pendulums, oracles, scrying, bones, crystal/stone gems and crystal balls.

You will send your partner 1 of the fortune telling methods listed above (if I have missed any please post below and if approved I will add them to the list on here). Please include instructions on how to begin/read the methods you selected as not everyone is familiar with all ways of reading.

Many of these items can be bought at local metaphysical shops and even some bookstores (I wouldn't recommend online but that's just my preference. I feel that it's important to feel the energy of whatever you're buying, it's good to get a feeling about a certain deck or set of runes for example, of course if that is your only and best way of purchasing it's not discouraged).

For those of you who are amazing at making your own set of cards, runes, ogham, etc., feel free to do so (just please realise that not all of us are crafty). I know many of you are fantastic artists and work with clay and natural elements, that's a gift! Please use it if you wish, just make it nice.

Step 2: The look

Please send your partner something to decorate their tent/space! Maybe something to lay down on the table, like a small tablecloth, or charm box, maybe there is a book of spells lying to the side, anything that could add to the atmosphere, think of walking into Morgan's tent she has set up at this local faire just outside Camelot...what might you find inside? Again these items may be purchased or handmade.

Step 3: The scent

The scent of a fortune telling tent is almost as important as the look and feel as certain aromas can help induce a state of relaxation and aid us in tapping into the divine. Please include for your partner some type of essential oil they can burn, incense sticks or cones, maybe they burn sweet herbs like sage. I will let people list preferences below for this as some scents I realise may cause migraines or are just not appealing to some. (If you are allergic to most scents and it's difficult for you to burn any of these please make note of this below as well and your partner can substitute either another small item for your decor or something to drink for those cold fair evenings like herbal teas or coffee).

The End: In closing

I realise this may be more of an expensive swap, the first item being the most expensive, but you can still find tarot decks for around $15 if you look but I would say keep it between $20-$30 total. (If you make your own tarot decks or runes then this could be more affordable for you, it's possible to make your own loose incense as well). Of course if you wish do more it's never a bad thing.

Well, I hope this sounds fun! Believe me it is! I know it may seem like a lot to read over but I like to be thorough and fair. I really want us all to receive a package that we could basically just open up and "set up shop" almost immediately! Any extras are nice but please focus on the main swap first and foremost. Some extras that may be nice to send along should you wish could be a bag for tarot cards, used books in good condition explaining more about selected method or maybe a small pendant or something for your fortune teller to wear herself, the possiblities are endless! So let's all do our best and make Morgan proud!

This is a group swap so everyone should be trustworthy but I will say this now - if you flake on a group swap you will be dropped from the group. Also, if you are going to be late even by a day please pm your partner to let them know it's just common courtesy. I understand life happens.

Have fun with this and happy fortune telling!!!

Yay! Our first group swap! I am open to anything so surprise me!

Trinket 01/21/2009 #

Gonna sign up to this one as my birthday treat.

Im hoping to make a beautifal full set of runes for my partner for this, appologies if folk are hoping for 100% bought things, Im sadly a little poorer this early in the year, but I'll do my best to make something my partner will love. Of course I do have a few things that can go for part 3, that are bought. Im sure someone would appreciate those.

NaughtyElf 01/21/2009 #

I think that whatever you decide to do your partner will be very lucky!

tinnuwen 01/22/2009 #

Aw, this sounds SO wonderful!!! I am currently watching this swap but to 99% will sign up closer to the date. I just need to be a bit careful with my time these days and for THIS swap I'd especially want to ensure I do it really well. :) I would probably make something myself, maybe buy something else...

Ogham sounds like a wonderful option - it's something I've always wanted to get into but haven't yet. I would probably make a set of runes for my partner as I am currently exploring them a little more. :) But shhh, no more revealed.

Sunnie 01/22/2009 #

What a cool swap .. soo imaginative its going to be so much fun ,its on my watchlist but I'm starting on it now :) thanks for this one :)

NaughtyElf 01/22/2009 #

How wonderful! I think this is going to be a good one! I don't have the skills to make runes or anything yet, but will learn sometime soon I hope! But, there are many wonderful metaphysical shops in my area and I like to shop!

NaughtyElf 01/22/2009 #

You're welcome Sunnie!

NaughtyElf 01/22/2009 #

I really have to say when I read what Trinket wrote in our forums about her loving anything to do with fortune telling, it sparked this swap in my mind, so say thank you to Trinket too for being my inspiration! Thanks Trinket!!!

tinnuwen 01/22/2009 #

the thing around here actually is that there are no such shops around, so one has to get very inventive pretty soon... :) and starting making own things. Having shops like this would be heaven!

NaughtyElf 01/22/2009 #

I am sure though that whatever you make will be lovely, I think many of us underestimate ourselves! But no shops like that? I would be sad...thank goodness you have an imaginative mind!

Ogma 01/22/2009 #

Very cool idea! I'm in. :-)

magicjessnrach 01/22/2009 #

This sounds like a wonderful swap BUT it would be way too expensive for me to send from Australia. Maybe next swap I can join in :)

NaughtyElf 01/22/2009 #

Sure, I am trying to get some lighter swaps going in my head too, hopefully soon, maybe next week? I know that last heavy package I sent to AUS was like $27 in postage, but worth it, my partner totally freaked out for all the stuff. I don't mind if I have the money but at this point that's like maybe 3 times a year these days to send a swap like that! We'll get you in on the next one! Thanks!

cobaltgypsy 01/23/2009 #

I'm watching it for now because of my current swap list, but I most certainly plan on joining this one!!!

Oh, NaughtyElf, you forgot the method of bones in your fortune telling ways. (yup, some people still use them!) and stones too. A friend of mine uses various crystals/gemstones to divine with.

I'm so glad you said that we can make things! I am always making my own tarot decks! =^_^=

As for scents, I'd like to ask my partner to stick with something like Nag Champa, Sandalwood, Lavender, Sage or Lemongrass for me. I'm not trying to be picky, it is just that most others make me ill. Thanks for understanding.

This is gonna be fun!! blessings, Gypsy

NaughtyElf 01/23/2009 #

Thanks for the suggestion Gypsy, I have added it to the list above! You're a treasure! And how lucky is your partner I think handmade tarot decks are amazing! Or what ever you decide to send. I hope we all have a great time with this one!

BigHillGoddess 01/23/2009 #

I think this is one of the most exciting swaps I have seen on swap-bot. I wish I was talented/artistic enough to make tarot cards or runes!

NaughtyElf 01/25/2009 #

Me too! I may try my own runes at some point, you know use clay and all that, but I have to experiment first! That's why store bought is definately an option here as well! I am so glad this is getting such a good response, we'll have to have someone make a Flickr group for it so we can post pics of our swaps we get!

bookwyrmm 01/29/2009 #

I am currently in a tarot deck swap, so I would prefer another type of fortune telling devise (other types of oracle cards are fine). Also, please no lavender for me.

muincat 01/31/2009 #

Oh wow! This sounds like so much fun and if these are the kinds of swaps we're going to do, its going to be a blast! :-) Sadly, I am just too broke right now to participate. Even postage is difficult for me as I only get $100 a week on unemployment. I am going to watch it though and if it looks like I'll be able to swing it, I'll sign up closer to time. Hopefully, finances will get better later in the year and I'll be able to start participating.

A divination tool I've been wanting to make from scratch is Witch's Runes, so maybe you could add that as well. :-)

NaughtyElf 02/ 2/2009 #

I'll just go ahead and say that the Witch's Runes will fall under the Runes catagory in general as there are so many different styles of runes...but thank you so much for the pic they are so colorful!

LadyBathory 02/10/2009 #

Wow this sounds so amazing, I really really want to be in this swap, but I will have to make sure I have time and money :)

About the fortune telling, what about pendulums and junk oracles?

threesweetpeas 02/12/2009 #

yes i was also wondering about pendulums too!!

NaughtyElf 02/13/2009 #

Yes, sorry I forgot pendulums and orcales are fine, just make sure once again you give instructions for your partner! Thanks guys, I'll add them to the list too!
