Description:

For this swap you will write a short story - at least 1500 words long. The story can be about anything you like, any genre, as long as it is a story that stands on it own.

Writing time is one whole month, so you can write without a rush and maybe polish up your story a bit after you've done the first version :-)

Ah! I would love to see this swap in the future. I'm not sure if I can fit a short story in with my NaNoWriMo plans, though.

@nserviam I will host it again in the new year! :-)

@nserviam I was at a workshop with Jeffrey Deaver this summer. One of his best tips, especially if your word count isn't where you want it to be, was brilliant. Pluck a secondary character from your novel. Write a short story about that character, something going on with him/her that iscompletely separate from the core novel. After you complete the short story, divide it up into chunks and intersperse through the original novel. You'll have some patch work to do and maybe, but not necessarily, some transitions to add, but in that one short story, you will have added a subplot with a beginning, middle and end; a new dynamic with a secondary character's world; and page count. Genius!

Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme thrillers are tightly plotted, researched and well written, with fully rounded recurring characters, and ingeniously horrible bad guys with good reasons for doing evil things.

After he told us about the short story addition in the workshop, I sat there thinking, "so that's how he does it!"

So, use this most excellent swap to get a NaNo's day of writing in AND deepen your story.

Huh, what a neat idea. I might have to try that!

On the way to my partner! Enjoy.
