Description:

For this swap, we'll be making and sharing a masterboard with 2 other partners. I've created a few of these now, and they can be a fantastic source of inspiration for all kinds of art/craft projects, as well as being a great way to rethink and reuse materials and take part in a meditative process.

Please use the basic process shown in the following video (making it your own, of course). Please note that we will NOT be making an ATC for this swap, only the masterboard, and that you aren't required to use ink or stamping if you don't wish to do so.

Masterboard of Collage

You will need:

• One 12"X12"sheet of cardstock

• Lots of scrap paper: any and all kinds, including everyday ephemera, are great to use (as long as they're somewhat porous)

• Gel medium (glue will not work) or mod podge

• a small foam or bristled brush to apply the gel medium

• optional, but you'll probably want ink, paints, stamps, etc. to add depth and interest

Remember to continue layering scraps on the masterboard and try out different techniques to help it evolve into something cohesive and detailed enough that small-ish sections can be used while maintaining visual interest.

Be certain that your masterboard can flex and still be one solid piece-- no parts should peel up or fall off. The result should be fairly flat and smooth.

A personal note: I've found it helpful and enjoyable to work on a masterboard over time, in multiple sessions. For me, coming back to it helped me to see it with a fresh perspective and to generate more ideas of how I might proceed. Of course, you should make your masterboard in whatever way suits YOU best!

After creating your 12"X12" collage masterboard, cut it in half. Keep one half for yourself to use in your own projects. Cut the other in half so that it makes two 6"X6" squares. You will send one of these squares to each of your two partners, and they can use them in their own art/craft projects. Be sure to package these so that they're well protected and arrive safely and fully intact to your partners.

This swap is sender's choice, so you can get started ahead of time. You will have 3 full weeks after partner assignment to work on creating your masterboard; I would not expect it to take that long, but this way people can participate with plenty of time to make something they're happy with even if they have an event or are busy during one of those weeks.

As long as you receive a 6"X6" masterboard of collage from your partner that meets the above criteria, you should rate a 5. Hearts, as always, are at your own discretion.

If it becomes necessary, I will angel this swap after you have attempted to contact your partner and honestly rated a "1." This should not be an issue. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Most importantly, have fun experimenting and enjoy the process!

What have you done to me @phillaine ?! I just spent the last 2 hours watching masterboard tutorials!

YESSSSSSS!!! I'm going to be doing that for weeks now. Mesmerizing, isn't it? I plan to include different videos for more inspiration in the future.

what are some uses for the board. this is a great technique for my art 1 students! I'm thinking altered book journal covers, ATC's...how else can they use these? I need about 10 things so I can make examples. thanks for the help! I will join later after I actually get one made.

Fantastic, @samjowers ! I've used them in making ATCs, small bits for pocket letters, greeting cards, bookmarks; you could use them to make inchies/twinchies, mail art postcards, picture or mirror frames, magnets (punches are great for this), coasters (sealed or under glass--this would work for paperweights as well), tags, gift/trinket boxes...and lots more, I'm sure! I hope this helps.

Well, I've already got 3 boards on the go, so I might as well sign up, lol

:) Great!

It's a good use of that really ugly cardstock that comes in those packets, the ones that are too ugly even for the insides of envelopes.

SO sorry I didn't assign partners earlier-- unexpected complications this weekend. Luckily, it's not a profile-based masterboard, and everyone should still have plenty of time (3 full weeks before it's due out). Thanks for your understanding.
