Description:

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PEN PALS, International!

I've been thinking about how to do this swap on Swap-Bot, and think I finally have an idea! I hope you will join me!

I love learning languages, and before I die, I hope to be proficiently trilingual. English is my language of birth, but a few years ago I began working towards my goal of being able to fluently speak, write, and read Hebrew. Now I am working on Italian.

This means that I would LOVE to have a pen pal or two who can fluently speak, write, and read Hebrew OR Italian and maybe wants a little help with polishing their English.

Because Swap-Bot automatically matches up partners, I never figured out how to make it work. But here's what I've come up with.

1. Sign up for the swap if you are interested in having a foreign language pen pal.
2. After signing up, leave a comment below about what language(s) you fluently speak/read/write AND what language(s) you are trying to learn or be better at speaking/reading/writing.
3. When partners have been matched up, do two things: a. read through the comments and find a person or two who is fluent in the language you are wanting to be better at. Go to that person's profile here on Swap-Bot and contact them privately, to exchange addresses, and write a letter of introduction and send it. **b. send a post card or letter to the person to whom you have been matched up, whether or not they write a language in which you are interested. This way, everyone gets at least a postcard out of this swap. You can send whatever greetings you would like in this postcard or letter.

Easy peesy!!

IN SUMMARY, YOU WILL BE SENDING TO YOUR ONE ASSIGNED PARTNER:

  • a post card or letter, as simple or elaborate as you'd like
IN ADDITION, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO, BASED ON THE COMMENTS YOU CAN CONTACT OTHER PARTICIPANTS PRIVATELY TO SEE IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO CORRESPOND WITH YOU AS YOU TRY TO BECOME BETTER AT A FOREIGN LANGUAGE THEY ARE FLUENT IN.

Because this swap only involves a postcard or letter, I will allow newbies, but I will be checking profiles. Of course this is international.

BE SURE AND SIGN UP FOR MY OTHER SWAPS:

Spring in the Kitchen
Summer in the Kitchen
Autumn in the Kitchen

Interesting idea! I am working on my Hebrew (also French, Polish and Russian) too but progress is slow :(
I have added this swap to my 'watchlist'! :)

purplewhimsy 10/11/2008 #

English is my only fluent language, but I a working on conversational Hebrew as well as conversational Italian. I am intermediate with Hebrew and Beginner with Italian, currently taking classes and studying hard in both.

I am looking for a correspondent/pen pal who knows Hebrew, OR wants to practice it in letters if you are learning it, and also a correspondent/pen pal who knows Italian.

Know Italian? Molto bene! Know Hebrew? Tov m'od! Contact me and lets be pen pals!

This swap is on my watch-list. I offer native German, sufficient English, conversational Swedish and basic school French. I would love to improve the two last. Feel free to contact me.

English is my only fluent language, however, I can speak and read enough French and Spanish to get by (I can also write enough to make it understandable although my sentence structure and verb conjugations are a little on the rusty side. It would probably be better for me to write in English and read in a different language LOL) :)

kacka 10/13/2008 #

I am native Czech, speak well English, little German and Russian, tried Spanish and learning Japanese:))

Hi, I just join, so you might get a letter in Hebrew after all. Can I write about anything? Do I need to add translation?

danit 10/13/2008 #

and can it be handwritten?

purplewhimsy 10/15/2008 #

postcards/letters can be hand written, typed out, any way you want to.

purplewhimsy 10/31/2008 #

I'm excited to see quite a few sign ups! Remember, read my description carefully. You will get matched up by the Swap-Bot computer automatically, and I have no control over those matchups. To that person you will send a postcard or a letter, hadwritten or typed, as simple or elaborate as you'd like. IN ADDITION, as you read these comments, feel free to contact another Swap-Bot member directly (through Swap-Bot and the link on their Swap-Bot profile page) to ask if you can write to them directly.

I'm italian and i'd like very much to have a english spoken pen pals...^__^I speak also French and a little German (but very little...)

deborah 11/ 2/2008 #

I can offer Spanish and Latin ^^

I'm not sure if you count Latin, since it's not really foreign so much as... well, dead. So if that doesn't count, let me know and I'll stick with Spanish!

pixieblue 11/ 3/2008 #

I'm only fluent in English, although I have some basic Spanish knowledge that I'd love to improve (a lot) and I'd love to learn German, Japanse, Italian, or Russian.

KATii 11/ 4/2008 #

i'm fluent in English and german :] i'm also interssted in new penpals so if anyone interessted than let me know :] If someone can teach me some french or swedish than this would be great :].

mortaine 11/ 4/2008 #

I am fluent in English. I read/write Middle English and Old English (but would prefer not to correspond in them, as all of my books are in storage right now).

I am more-than-conversational in French, and am an intermediate Spanish speaker, and happy to penpal with someone in either of those languages, or in English.

mortaine 11/ 4/2008 #

Oh, also if anyone's looking for a community for blogging/sharing in a foreign language, Lang-8 (http://www.lang-8.com) is kind of cool.

OlcSylvia 11/ 5/2008 #

I decided to sign up. So, again, I offer native German, sufficient English, conversational Swedish and basic school French. I would love to improve the two last. Feel free to contact me.

jessicababyy90 11/ 5/2008 #

This is going on my watchlist. I'm fluent in Spanish and English and would reallly love to learn a new language.

purplewhimsy 11/ 5/2008 #

ANYONE SPEAK/READ/WRITE ITALIAN??????? That's what I want to learn, but alas, none of our members from Italy have joined the swap, even though I personally invited a few......

Well, deadline for signup is tomorrow at midnight.....

Remember, you will need to send a post card to the person to whom you are assigned by the Swap-Bot computer, and feel free to look through these comments and directly contact anyone who reads/writes a language in which you are interested....

kushkusha 11/ 6/2008 #

Hebrew is my language of birth:-) And I would be happy to join this swap and get letters in any language - besides English (which I know quite well)

Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or any other language

But can you clarify- how whould the letter look like? Should I write in hebrew and how to say it (Using ABC) + the translation

can you give an example??

mortaine 11/ 6/2008 #

Hey, purplewhimsy and all: I also found another really awesomely cool site (livemocha.com), where you can do self-study lessons, practice with online chats, and do peer reviewed writing and speaking exercises (and help others, too). I joined it this week and found it really awesome and helpful. I'm mortaine over there, too (friend me if you join! ;) That might be a way to pick up elementary italian, @purplewhimsy

Becky 11/ 7/2008 #

Do you know when the partners will be chosen?

purplewhimsy 11/ 8/2008 #

Wow, Mortaine, thank you!!!!!!

Becky, partners have been assigned.

EVERYONE: REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR POST CARD BY THE DEADLINE!!

danit 11/24/2008 #

purplewhimsy, thank you for the card. Now I'm waiting for the one from my swap partner.

OlcSylvia 11/26/2008 #

Danit, it is on its way. But NZ is far far away, it might take some time to reach you.
