Description:

"Fair trade is the ability to say that in the things I buy, I want to shape the lives of other people in a respectful, humanitarian way."

The above quote is from this "World of Good" video called "Fair Trade is You": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk7QQQUQGho

You can find out more about "Fair Trade" here: http://www.fairtraderesource.org/learn-up/faq/

and here: http://store.gxonlinestore.org/aboutfairtrade.html

For this swap we will make an ATC using wrappers/packaging from a fair trade product(s). The one requirement is to include the "Fair Trade Certified" label on the ATC. (Use wrappers/packaging from fair trade chocolate, coffee, tea, etc.) You can make a collage with images from the wrapper/packaging or just cut out the label and incorporate it into your original drawing or design.

I've uploaded a couple ATCs that I made as examples.

Make one ATC and send it to one partner.

Please join this swap only if you are sure you will keep the commitment to send. I will ban anyone who looks like they might be a risk. If you'd like to participate but have received a rating that you believe is unfair, please send me a message to explain. I will also ban anyone not showing signs of your recent activity on swap-bot.

This is international.

I have a question... I've never bought the Fair Trade Certified items before, but while scanning the racks I also found what they call "100% Ethically Traded". Is this the same thing? Can I use those labels, or did I just buy some really cool looking chocolate bars... lmao. I bought 2 of each just so the family can do a little taste test (they have some cool flavors!) so it doesn't matter. Just let me know!

This is what it says on the brands website... "Philosophically, ethical trade and fair trade are one in the very same."

how do ATC-ers feel about laminating?

tamipal6 07/19/2008 #

Sportzmedchick: You ask a good question. I think that if the product goes to the trouble of saying they are "100% ethically traded", then we should give them the benefit of the doubt. If the product doesn't have the fair trade label, however, (see: http://www.transfairusa.org/content/resources/faq.php) then it means that their claim hasn't been verified. I found one coffee company that claims to be fair trade, but doesn't have the label so I was concerned, but then I read more about the company and found out that they own their own coffee plantations, so they don't need to "trade" for their coffee beans, hence they wouldn't need the label. This is a unique business. See http://www.evo.com/content/gifttree/40340/faracafefairtradecoffeewithscoop and http://www.austin360.com/fooddrink/content/fooddrink/stories/2007/07/0722fincas.html.

It IS good to beware of companies misleading consumers into thinking their product is socially responsible when it really isn't...as in the case of Nestle's "Partner's Blend" coffee which turned out to only be .02% fair trade. Can you imagine that? Read more here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/fair-trade/nestle.cfm.

Thanks for swapping!

MommyKnows: I am not really sure how ATC-ers in general feel about laminating. The "rules" for making ATCs are pretty loose, but one thing that is important is that it should meet size requirements: 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" so if it is that size WITH the lamination, then it should be fine. I have never gotten a laminated ATC, but if I got one that was and it was still the right size, I know I'd love it! :)

I have been working on my atc today..having been forced to eat some fair trade choccie to get at the wrapper :-) Looking forward to getting partners assigned so I can see who my partner to send to is. Very pleased 'cos this swap led to me finding a new fair trade shop which has some lovely things in it and I found some cards I had been looking for everywhere,

mwquilt: Great to hear that the swap led you to a new fair trade shop!
