Image from austinkleon.com for demonstration purposes only Check out his site for awesome blackout poetry ideas and inspiration!

For this swap, photocopy a NEWSPAPER page (or you may use the actual newspaper if you like...if you do so, please mount it on card stock or similar, sturdy material). Black out all but a few words creating a poem from the words. You may add embellishments, or draw/doodle on the page in between the blackouts, but it IS NOT NECESSARY. :)

ADDED 13 FEBRUARY - Use of newspapers printed in languages other than English is acceptable. Please write an English translation upon the page on which you are writing the finished poem. (Does that make sense? Oh, I am unsure...)

THIS GETS MISSED A LOT: Your info will NOT be on the back of this page... You will put at least your final poetry words, name, date, and location (i.e. city, state, country, as it's always nice to see where your swaps came from) on a separate paper to be put into your partner's journal on a facing page.

You will have 2 partners and will send a different photocopied blackout poem to each of them (you can always send more if you feel inspired). Pages should be no larger than composition book size (apprx 7.5 inches x 9.5 inches). You can decorate it if you wish, but it is not a requirement.

Use your imagination and have fun! Send something you would like to receive.

We will NOT actually mail journals around, but we will decorate our own journals to paste our received poetry into. Please use a book that is at least composition notebook size, as that should be about the right size for any of the swaps you get.

This is a repeating swap, and I will host every three weeks or so as long as there is interest.

A rating of 4.8 or above please to participate in this swap. I will not tolerate flakers and late sends. Late senders in my swaps are banned from the next series swap of any of my swaps unless they contact me and I deem the reason to be excusable. Will angel if necessary. Responsible newbies with well-filled profiles are welcome.

PLEASE WATCH FOR THE UPCOMING BLACKOUT POETRY GROUP I WILL BE STARTING SOON!

OMG amazing swap idea! I'm so excited about this!!!!

Katti 02/13/2013 #

Can I do a poetry in an other language than English? I only have German and Swedish newspapers. I can always translate. :)

wittmert 02/13/2013 #

I would be happy to get a poem in something other than English, if I get the translation, too.

latentsmile 02/13/2013 #

@Katti - I am going to say that would be perfectly fine for this particular round, considering that this series IS after all INTERNATIONAL. I would also LOVE to receive such a piece for my journal! <3

Dear Coordinator: I joined the swap, but if I am too new I would be happy to do the swap prior to getting assigned partners and send you proof of completion. :)

What an incredible idea!!! I agree with the poems in other languages - I think that would be really neat, as long as it was sent with a translation :)

latentsmile 02/18/2013 #

@RobotAteMyShoelaces that won't be necessary, I can tell that you are proactive simply by your contacting me. However I would like to see your profile more fully completed before I assign partners in a couple of weeks. We all want to be able to get to know our partners, and as a coordinator the best way to do that is by reading profiles. <3

What a fun swap--I'll have to pass for now though. I was wondering if there are any thoughts on whether we can make a requirement that the pages that are sent not be folded? I find they're nicer to keep within the notebooks. But then I'm one person ;) Hopefully I can participate in the next one!

Hi everyone. I apologize for being late assigning partners. I lost computer access and have only been able to log on with my phone the past few days. So sorry!

@CleopatraWarbucks - due to recent HUGE increases in international shipping costs, I will not include this as a requirement.
