Description:

I was spending my evening on Pinterest and decided to immerse myself into the Journaling boards for some inspiration. Minutes turned into hours and soon I had too much creativity to contain myself. I then decided that it would be incredibly fun to make a traveling art journal!

How it works: - Purchase/make a journal of your choosing (if you purchase one, feel free to decorate it the way you want, or if you make one, you can make it any way you want. I'd suggest 15pages or so, but it's up to you) - Accessorize/decorate it, and write your name/address on the inside of the back cover. Since it will be traveling between multiple people in several rounds, I want to make sure you get your original journal back :) - Send it to your swap partner - Swap partner will fill out a journal spread with art/postcards/scrapbooking/etc. (Think SMASH journals) - Book will be forwarded to the next partner and so on - I am planning on about 10 rounds, and extend it if it goes well.

EDIT: Thanks to suggestions from other users, I have set the rating to 4.95, to avoid flaking and the like. I do appreciate the suggestions that will make this swap safer/more fun, so feel free to message me or post down in the comments :)

I think it is a great idea but you must set some rating requirements to avoid flaking...

Thank you for the suggestion - this is my first time actually setting up a swap (I mostly just join them, but I could not find one like this at the time...), so if you (or anyone else) have any suggestions on what rating requirements to set/any other ones, I'd be happy to oblige ^^

I definitely would like for this to be a successful journal journey for us all and not have anyone flake :D

Please clarify for me what you mean by "Send it to your swap partner - Swap partner will fill out a journal spread with art/postcards/scrapbooking/etc. (Think SMASH journals) " Thanks. I'm watching this swap at the moment. Barbara

@ajijic which part of that do you need clarified?

"Send it to your swap partner" - after putting your name/address in YOUR journal, send it to your assigned swap partner (assigned when sign up deadline ends). "Swap partner will fill out a journal spread with art/postcards/scrap booking/etc" - the swap partner you sent YOUR journal to will fill out a spread (2pages) with the listed items/whatever items/styles they use for art journaling. You would be doing this to a journal you receive. "Think SMASH journals" - if you do a google search on the term, it will explain it better than I can.

Hope that helps, if not, please elaborate which part you'd like me to clarify more :)

So, I must to buy/create an art journal, decorate the covers, write my name/address on the inside of the back cover and send it to my swap partner - thats it? I dont have to decorate some pages for myself? My swap partner just rate my 5 when I send an empty journal to her? And if you open another round then she will decorate some pages and send it to her swap partner, is it right?

It would be super awesome if whomever has my journal can write they're name and location somewhere on the pages so I can see where my traveling journal has been once it returns home. Just a thought. :)

I am new at journaling. What is the best type of notebook to use?

comatosebunnies 01/10/2013 #

@FundyGirl That's a fantastic idea! That way we also know who to thank for beautiful art!

comatosebunnies 01/10/2013 #

@Amberly it's really up to you, but I suggest nothing smaller than A5 (6"x8.5"), otherwise there's not much space to work on and nothing bigger than A4 (8.5"x12"), otherwise there may be too much space to fill in for your partner. Paper quality wise, I'd suggest something fairly sturdy. Personally, I am getting a watercolor resistant journal. You have to keep in mind that different artists have different mediums, meaning that some may use things like watercolor and ink, which will just destroy thin pages.

Hope tat helps :) After assigning partners, I'll make sure to email everyone suggestions and the like, in case they did not get a chance to read them :))

Even though this swap is closed - and unfortunatley I found it after it had closed --- in order to join in the next round, may I get my journal ready and do the first spread myself to be at the same point as everyone else?

I will be using a composition book that I have stuck two pages together for each spread in order to offer more stability for whatever artwork anyone choses to do. Good grief, I'm not sure that makes sense, but I dare not try again.

comatosebunnies 01/14/2013 #

@grandmaroro Of course you can :) I've actually created a group for this swap, so feel free to join to know when we have the next round: http://www.swap-bot.com/group/12b714b550010693c39d2ecd602299c6/about I am wondering, however, how the composition notebook (with two pages for support) stands up to watercolor...I know a lot of artists love using it and I remember ripping through a few of my books when I tried them >.> Anyway - hope to have you in the next round :)

Amberly 01/16/2013 #

Can someone send me a link to a watercolor resistant journal?

grandmaroro 01/18/2013 #

@comatosebunnies - My pages would be stuck together with double sided tape, so that might not be a good idea, especially for water coloring, and I would not want to limit anyone's creativity.

I received a watercolor journal - it is awesome, and it was done in a regular journal. The pages are a bit "wonky" but that just adds to the character.

grandmaroro 01/18/2013 #

Okay - where to start? Well, I have a collection of empty journals that I purchase at my favorite Goodwill store. I have some very unique ones and I have a lot that I should be using for swaps. So, in going through my bookcase, I discovered a lovely red cordurory covered one with ribbon ties that has about 20 pages of a sturdy art paper,I would guess it to be watercolor paper, but I don't know that for sure. Anywho --- I have found my traveling art journal. I am sooooo excited.

TwistedHorologe 01/20/2013 #

My journal was a bit smaller than A5, I'm hoping it was ok ...

When is the next round going to start?

This Traveling Art Journal swap sounds absolutely delightful! It’s such a creative way to connect with others and share artistic expression across the world. I love the idea of seeing how each person adds their unique touch to the journal, bringing different styles, inspirations, and stories. Plus, the process of the journal physically traveling from one hand to another makes it feel like a collective art piece that builds upon each round. I appreciate the efforts to ensure everyone’s original journals make it back to them, and the 4.95 rating requirement is a smart move to keep things smooth and fun for everyone. Looking forward to seeing the final results and how the journals transform throughout their journey! Make a Calendar
