Description:

This is for all the Discworld / Sir Terry Pratchett/ Hogfather fans ... All the instructions below reference the book (and movie) "Hogfather," by Terry Pratchett. If this seems like an interesting swap, but you are unfamiliar with the book or movie, then there are a few weeks to read the book or watch the movie and see if you like it and want to join in the fun!

My family now incorporates Hogfather into our holiday celebrations every year, but we never get any Hogswatch cards! Are you feeling like a certain key player is absent? Time running out on the holidays? Have you found all kinds of creatures in your bathroom and laundry, but none leaving you Hogswatch cards on your mantel? HO HO HO it is time to buy or make and send 2 partners Hogswatch cards.

Cards could be Christmas or Holiday cards that seem appropriate to the theme (ie, featuring pigs or pork pies (obviously not if your partner is a vegetarian!) or skeletal figures or robins that are trying to fly off the card), or a more general Discworld theme. Cards could be holiday cards that are altered to fit the Hogswatch theme. It is up to you whether you try to put a robin on your card or not, but we are counting on you not to flake. We will know: HAVE YOU BEEN NAUGHTY, OR HAVE YOU BEEN NICE?

Since it is Hogswatch, and I am new to this coordinator thing, I can be generous if you are new or have a rating less than 4.9 if you have a good explanation (email me). Really, though, you don't want to mess with my backup coordinator. He has glowing blue eyes and .. just looks a little intimidating at times. If you try your best, attempt to keep the robin stuck to the card and offer an appropriate Hogswatch greeting, then you should rate a 5. Extras such as a Discworld ATC, bookmark, object or picture are NICE, but optional. We will send cards to arrive on time for Hogswatch, which is taking place November 24 on Roundworld this year.

I will angel. I am new to this, so let me know if there is anything I can do to clarify or improve this swap! I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

PTerry would be so proud. :O)

Thanks! I got to meet him last year and I was completely tongue-tied! Hope we can find some more Discworld fans out there to participate!

I thought Hogswatch was on the solstice... which is not 11/24. I am so still in!

rngstgstll 09/16/2012 #

We celebrate it in our family between the solstice and New Year's sometime, but the "official" celebration at the Cunning Artificer's in Wincanton, UK (twin city with Ankh-Morpork) is on November 24. I seem to remember reading somewhere what the actual date Sir Terry intended is, but I forget. I know it is based on when sows farrow as well. Anyone out there have more info? I am open to moving the date if there is a general consensus. And .. so glad you signed up, anyway, Lady! Thanks!! I am so excited to do this!

Lady 09/17/2012 #

Thanks for the info! Everyone in the house has read the book. We watch the movie annually between solstice & new year. (I wish the other DiscWorld movie were as we'll done!)

rngstgstll 09/17/2012 #

Yay! That is pretty much our tradition, too, except we always read the passage about the sun rising versus giant ball of gas in the sky either on solstice or Christmas Eve. Then I start crying and everyone else rolls their eyes. It's a jolly tradition.

Have you seen "Going Postal"? I like the quality of the production. I believe it is the most recent one to be released in the US. Just about every year at Christmas the BBC does one, at least recently. Any folks from the UK out there to confirm this? And where are the Aussies and Kiwis? Tell me you are out there, watching the swap!

I am so envious of you guys. I live in South Africa, and haven't seen any Pratchett movies. I just love his books. My family think I am touched, especially when I burst out laughing while reading his books. I am definitely joining this swap.

rngstgstll 09/18/2012 #

Yes! So glad to have you in!

I was thinking that it might be fun to write as a favorite character, if so inclined/ talented. I am trying to picture what a card from Death of Rats might look like .... or Foul Ole Ron? I can almost visualize an Igor-made card ...

What DVD region is South Africa? And .. forgive me, never heard of one, is there an appropriate term for South African nationals like "Brit," "Aussie,", "Kiwi"?

I've always considered Hogswatch to be on the solstice, and watching the movie is a part of our tradition. Hogswatch is one of my son's favorite books so he'll definitely enjoy seeing these come in!

rngstgstll 09/19/2012 #

I was thinking that it might be interesting to do a Wintersmith type solstice-related swap ...

Tomorrow, 21 September, is Alzheimer's Awareness Day. Folks are being encouraged to wear purple in order to raise awareness of the impact of Alzheimer's disease on those affected by the disease, their family, and friends. While May 25 has been chosen by Discworld fans as "Wear the Lilac Day" (a reference to Night Watch, in honor of Terry and Alzheimer's awareness, this is another opportunity for those who are interested to show solidarity.

OOK!

rngstgstll 09/25/2012 #

Do not let me detain you from signing up/ remaining signed up for this "Swap."

DuhBe 09/28/2012 #

Dear future swap partner - if you could send my card enclosed in a sapient pearwood envelope, it would be much appreciated. Thank you and happy hogswatch. ;-)

rngstgstll 09/30/2012 #

Buggrit! Millenium hand and shrimp!

rngstgstll 10/ 4/2012 #

Cards may also be sent via Burleigh and Stronginthearm, provided one has the appropriate qualifications from the assassins guild. Personally, I would find this an inelegant manner of celebrating Hogswatch with an exhumation ... however, I know that some among us might have a ... unique ... perspective.

The Ankh-Morpork Post has asked me to kindly remind you that Wow-Wow sauce may only be posted interdepartamentally within the Unseen University and by no means should it be sent Express Mail to Quirm.

rngstgstll 10/ 8/2012 #

Nobby, er, that is Corporal Nobbs has asked me to remind the public that he does not require more soap, wot as he never uses it.

rngstgstll 10/11/2012 #

Check your emails for more Discworld web sites! Watchers, signup ends Sunday! I will send you links to Happy Hogswatch cards that can be purchased, if that helps tip you into the swap!

rngstgstll 10/13/2012 #

One day more, la la la la la la la .... Wait, I think that's from Les Miz, right?!

rngstgstll 10/13/2012 #

What a difference a day makes, 24 little hours ... and the difference is you!

Happy Swapswatch!

rngstgstll 10/15/2012 #

Swap's afoot!

DuhBe 10/15/2012 #

Woo Hoo! Partners assigned! Too many ideas and not enough robins!

rngstgstll 10/15/2012 #

Is that something like too many Cheeseheads, not enough brats or beer, DuhBe, or maybe too many Sto-Latians and not enough cabbage rolls?

Which Discworld place most resembles where you live, and in which place would you most like to live?

rngstgstll 10/21/2012 #

I gotta say that my town is sort of a cross between Sto Lat, the Unseen University (it's a university town) and the Mended Drum (it's Wisconsin, where there is a bar on every corner). Oh, and our lakes reseble the river Ankh at times, due to duckweed overgrowth. I'm not sure where I would like to live in Discworld, I think that I would love to travel it like Twoflower, blissfully ignorant of the danger at every turn. Or maybe look down on it, like the Lady ... Anyone else?
