Hard to say it's a 'good book' because of the subject matter, for sure, but I remember the emotional rollercoaster of reading it - or watching the movie - as well. There are some books like this one and memoirs and others that need a special rating scale, I think. Thanks for sharing! :)

I read this novel in 2016 - after watching the movie easily a decade or more beforehand (early 2000's?) and all I can remember after closing the book was "purple prose". If I hadn't seen the movie, I'm not sure if I would have finished the book as quickly as I did. Your review makes me want to revisit the heat of the desert and fall into the lush words of the author. I do recommend the movie for the wonderful players and the sumptuous visuals!! xxMuggleMom

Comment: I haven't read Persuasion yet, I don't think. Or it's been 20+ years. For some reason, I never got much into Jane Austen when I was younger (I'm more of a mystery person, I guess!) But I do have it and Emma on my "to be read' lists. As for Stephen King - I didn't read him for years and years, not til after I got married and my husband convinced me King wasn't "too scary" & I have been a HUGE fan ever since. They are creepy, they are spooky, but I love the way he writes the characters, the settings - omg. :) Christine was good, better than I remembered. (My son just read it so I re-read to talk about the book with him. I Think The Shining is next for us.) If you read one King book that you don't really enjoy, don't give up on him - try another era of his writing. :) And I'm more than willing to chat and recommend! :) As I said - super fan. Or, Constant Reader, as he says. :) Another GREAT book - spooky - is The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (King is also a fan of that book, and I can see how the writing influenced him - it's wonderful!) :)
